We have some incredibly exciting news to share with our community, educators, and the wider Maltese tech sector.
As many already know we’re celebrating 20 years of pioneering open technology across our islands and with that Open Source Society Malta (OSSMalta) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), the global standard for open-source certification.
This isn’t just an agreement on paper, it’s a major step forward in making Malta a high-tech bridge for the entire Mediterranean region. Our goal is simple: to make sure the next generation of local tech talent has access to the world-class, globally recognized credentials they need to thrive on the international stage.
Full Access to All LPI Offerings (Up to 60% Off)
Through this landmark agreement, OSSMalta will be acting as the dedicated distributor and liaison for LPI courses in Malta. We want to remove as many barriers as possible for schools, universities, and training institutions looking to offer these high-demand courses.
We are incredibly proud to announce that this agreement covers the entire LPI Certification Portfolio. If your educational institution partners with LPI through OSSMalta, you will get access to game-changing benefits:
- Massive Subsidies: Up to 60% off licensing packages and exam certificates for your students.
- Ultimate Flexibility: LPI has waived the minimum student requirements, meaning you can run these specialized courses even with a small cohort.
- Industrial Edge: These are the practical, industrial-grade certifications that tech giants like Google and Meta look for when hiring.
Maltese schools can now offer subsidized paths across three major tiers:
- The Essentials Track: Foundational courses in Linux, IT Security, Web Development, and Open Source business logic.
- The Professional Track (LPIC-1, LPIC-2, LPIC-3): Ranging from essential system administration to elite enterprise engineering, cloud virtualization, containerization, and security.
- Open Technology Track: Leading-edge certifications for DevOps Tools Engineers and BSD Specialists.
Building a National Alumni Network
The support doesn’t stop once a student passes their exam. Everyone who earns an LPI certification through this partnership will automatically become a member of Open Source Society Malta – OSSMalta.
We are actively using this to build an Alumni Network in Malta and beyond. This network will serve as a bridge to help certified professionals land great roles, while giving local employers direct access to the highly skilled talent they need. Members will also get exclusive discounts to keep training for higher certification levels throughout their careers.
Let’s Make Malta Better, Together
At its core, OSSMalta has always been a grassroots association. Our 20-year history has been entirely driven by the users, contributors, and everyday open-source champions who form the backbone of our community.
“Malta has the opportunity to position itself as a regional reference point for open source talent development. This MoU creates a bridge between community, education, and industry, helping students and professionals gain globally recognised skills that support innovation, employability, and digital sovereignty,” said Hernán Pachas Magallanes of Linux Professional Institute.
“For two decades, OSSMalta has championed the belief that open source is the key to digital autonomy and innovation,” says Warren Camilleri, Founder of OSSMalta. “But our true driving force has always been our people. This partnership with LPI is a tribute to their dedication, offering students and professionals a distinct competitive edge compared to mainland Europe.”
We believe that digital growth belongs to everyone. Whether you are a school principal looking to upgrade your curriculum, a local business looking for top-tier tech talent, or an open-source enthusiast who wants to volunteer and mentor, our doors are wide open. Let’s collaborate and lift Malta’s digital ecosystem together.
